Le Choisel’s picturesque setting and Normandy’s rich artistic, cultural and historic heritage makes it the inspiring location for creative writing holidays where writers and poets can come together, share their work and their thoughts and develop new ideas and styles.
You will take part in a wide variety of creative exercises and activities that are designed to stir the senses and awaken the imagination inspiring you to put pen to paper. Those activities will be combined into the week’s programme alongside readings and discussions chosen by course participants. These can be either your own work or favourite pieces that have touched you in some way.
The atmosphere is friendly, supportive and empowering; the activities are designed to be as challenging as they are rewarding. You will be encouraged to try out different styles of writing, from poetry to script-writing, and haikus to novels, explore ways of developing 3D characters and making scenes come alive by your description, and creating realistic dialogue.
The week rounds off with practical tips on getting your work published and marketing your work and yourselves, including preparing press releases and hosting media events.
The creative writing holidays cover 7 days/6 nights and include:
  • full board and accommodation; wherever possible, meals are prepared with locally-sourced ingredients including home-grown organic vegetables.
  • tuition and course handouts.

The groups are small (maximum of 8) to enable you to enjoy personal attention and tuition.

Please note: all tuition will be in English.
Holidays can be extended, subject to availability, if booked in advance.

Airport and ferry transfers can also be arranged, please ask for details and prices; all charges will be payable locally.

Non-participating partners sharing a room are welcome. They are invited to join us for meals and activities other than tuition sessions, and will be charged a reduced rate.
For writers’ clubs booking at least 5 participant places, the programme can be arranged on a bespoke basis.
Typical programme for a week-long creative writing holiday

Day 1: welcome
Arrive from 2pm onwards, settle in and meet your fellow writers over afternoon tea. Before and after dinner we will gather to share thoughts on your work (past and future), examples of favourite excerpts from literature, and what “creative writing” means to you.

Day 2: planning and plotting inspiring introductions
Getting started: Where do ideas come from? Planning around the plot: shaping your ideas. Introductions that hook the reader into wanting to read on.

Day 3: characteristics of characters and talking the talk
Getting under the skin of your characters so they live for your readers. Writing dialogue that sounds convincing, plausible and interesting to bring your characters to life and add colour to the story.

Day 4: setting the scene
Location, location, location – the reader needs to be placed in the middle of the setting and be able to see, feel, hear, smell and taste the setting.

Day 5: playing with words up to the end
Techniques in using words – rhymes, alliteration, double meanings, hidden messages. Drawing your work to a close.

Day 6: spreading the word
With your poems, novel or blog complete, we look at ways of publicising your work, from tips for getting your work published to creating a press and publicity campaign. The week ends with a gala dinner and readings.

Day 7: departure
After breakfast, time to say goodbye and swap contacts with friends you have made on the holiday.
